35 years ago Jan Beyea, Ph.D., founded Consulting in the Public Interest to provide scientific expertise and strategy for government, non-profit and private sector clients working to protect the environment. In 2022, his daughter, Alison Beyea, a civil rights lawyer and policy expert, took over leadership of the company and works with private and non-profit clients on organizational strategy, executive and senior leadership coaching, public affairs and philanthropic advising.

As a lawyer and executive, Alison Beyea has a reputation for creative and visionary ideas and her ability to build support to execute these ideas. Throughout her career, Alison has been a sought-after advisor and strategist for public officials, politicians, and private sector leaders. She is known for her ability to think creatively about big issues - addressing both the unseen risks and finding the hidden opportunities. Alison has crafted and overseen successful policy initiatives ranging from juvenile justice and criminal legal reform to women’s rights and abortion care. She has a proven track record of securing investments for a variety of organizations serving the public good and is skilled at building deep relationships with investors; partnering with foundations, families and businesses to bring about a vision for change.

Prior to her work with CIPI, Alison led the Maine affiliate of the ACLU, the premiere human rights organization in the country. During her tenure, she successfully navigated the organization through one of the most tumultuous times in our nation’s history and oversaw tremendous growth across the organization. Before joining the ACLU, Alison held a variety of leadership positions in not-for-profit and educational institutions in addition to clerking for the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Jan Beyea, Ph.D

As a college professor, Dr. Beyea taught earth science and environmental studies. He did research at Princeton's Center for Energy and Environmental Studies in two areas: nuclear reactor accidents and energy efficiency. He spent 15 years at the National Audubon Society, first as Senior Scientist, and then as Chief Scientist and Vice President, with major management responsibilities.

He has worked, written, or testified on virtually every environmental issue. Dr. Beyea has served on nine committees of the National Academies of Sciences dealing with environmental issues and he is a named reviewer of a number of other studies sponsored by the Acadamies, the most recent of which was published in 2022. He has developed productive relationships with industry, while maintaining friendships with environmental colleagues. One of his major interests is negotiated conflict resolution.
